Bill Dendle
Trombone / Guitar / Banjo

Bill began playing banjo in 1963, and by 1967 he performed at Mickie Finn's in San Diego as leader of the South Market Street Jazz Band.  Bill was the lead banjoist at Capone's Warehouse in Monterey for nine years. 1977 found Bill as an entertainment consultant, banjoist, trombonist, band leader and entertainer at Florida's Disneyworld, where he opened on the Empress Lilly Showboat.  In late 1977 he revived the South Market Street Jazz Band. From 1982 to 1995, Bill appeared as one-half of the duo called Goodtime Banjos.  Bill is currently director of three trad. jazz camp programs. He plays trombone, guitar and banjo in Shelley Burns & Avalon Swing, and with Fast Eddie Erickson. Bill has performed with Bob Haggart, Bob Crosby, Johnny Varro, Dick Cary, Abe Most, Nick Fatool, Bob Draga and others. He is currently Vice-Principal at Lindbergh Educational Center in Manteca, California.

TJYBF Guest Clinician in 2006

Bob’s professional career encompasses over thirty-five years of live performances (national and international) at jazz festivals, jazz cruises, and personal engagements.  Bob has appeared regularly with the Titan Hot 7, Wally’s Warehouse Waifs, and as a duo with Jeff Barnhart. Bob performs exclusively on the “high seas” for Jazzdagen Cruises, sailing throughout the world.  Since leaving the Garden Avenue Seven, a band he founded and led for twenty-two years, Bob has led several all-star bands, was co-leader of the Draga-Vax Connection for three years, and has worked frequently with Johnny Varro, Tom Saunders, Rick Fay, Bob Haggart, and other world-class jazz performers, and has many recordings to his credit. In addition to playing superb clarinet, Bob presents an almost wicked brand of humor, making him one of the busiest musicians on the trad jazz circuit today.

 

 

Bob Embry
Adjudicator / Reeds

Bob Embry holds a Masters degree in Conducting and is a veteran school band and orchestra director of over 21 years.  He was once known as music director and reed player for the Blue Street Jazz Band.  He returned to the Bay Area from Fresno last summer to teach and live in Brentwood. For the past five years, he has played tenor and clarinet for the Royal Society Jazz Orchestra.

 

 

Eddie Erickson Feedback/Banjo/Vocals
TJYBF Guest Clinician in 2008

"Fast Eddie" Erickson began his banjo/guitar career the mid '60s in the San Jose, CA area. He moved to Monterey, CA in 1969 to work at Capone's Warehouse on Cannery Row. From there, Ed went to DisneyWorld and Disneyland. He has been a featured performer at banjo shows, conventions, private parties, jazz concerts, and has appeared with such noted jazz performers as Jackie Coon, Rick Fay, Dan Barrett, Dave Frishberg, Johnny Varro, and others. Eddie has been featured with Big Mama Sue at festivals, fairs, and even the Sancy Snow Jazz Festival in France. Also a vocalist, Eddie has joined forces with Rebecca Kilgore and Dan Barrett to form BED, a fabulous jazz quartet that's a staple at jazz events throughout the country. Fast Eddie is a respected and beloved member of the jazz fraternity, and one of the funniest performers on the scene.

 

 

Craig Faniani
Feedback / Piano

Craig Faniani has been teaching in the San Juan Unified School District (SJUSD) for twenty-five years at Rio Americano High School. During that tenure his bands steadily and consistently built and maintained a reputation of music excellence.  Craig was a Mentor Teacher for twelve years in the SJUSD.  He won "Teacher of the Year" honors from the Carmichael Chamber of Commerce in 1990, and in the SJUSD in 1994.  Also that year, he was named "Music Educator of the Year" by the CMEA.  In 1998 he was awarded a fellowship from the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Association for "Excellence in Arts Education." He received the "Music of the Heart" award in 1999, and in 2000 was named "Teacher of the Year" for Sacramento County. Sacramento Magazine honored Craig and his bands in their 2001 "Best Of" special issue. School Band and Orchestra Magazine chose Craig as one of their "50 Music Directors in the Nation that Make a Difference."  Most recently, Sacramento News & Review recognized him with a "Lifetime Achievement Award" for his contributions to music education. Currently, Craig is the Curriculum Coordinator for the Visual and Performing Arts within the SJUSD.

Jason Wanner
2010 TJYBF Guest Clinician

In younger days, Jason Wanner's dad used to bring him to the Sac. Jazz Jubilee, where his love for jazz grew. As an STJS Music Award recipient, he played piano for TNT, the STJS-sponsored youth band. Amazingly, Jason went from being a student at the STJS Jazz Camp to earning his place as an instructor there. It brings a smile those who have watched him evolve into the brilliant musician he is today.

Jason is also part of the faculty at the jazz camp in Mammoth Lakes, CA, and performs regularly with Blue Street Jazz Band across the U.S.  He also apprears every so often with Sister Swing. He enjoys composing and arranging, and performing with his 11-piece swing band, Swing Syndicate.

Jason studied music for one year at USC but returned north to graduate from the California State University Sacramento School of Music with a Bachelor of Music in Classical Piano Performance. Steve Homan
Adjudicator / Guitar

A jazz guitarist and composer, Steve has performed professionally for over 30 years with a variety of top-named jazz artists, like Herb Ellis, Jimmy Smith, Ed Thigpen, Art Van Damme, and The Nelson Riddle Concert Orchestra. Steve has also appeared on recordings with Anita O’Day, Pete Jolly and vibraphonist Gene Estes, and has appeared at many jazz festivals including the Glasgow International Jazz Festival in Scotland, and the North Sea Jazz Festival in Europe.  He performed for the 1998 and 2000 Jazz Ambassadors Program held at The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C., and as part of this program, Steve completed music tours thoughout Africa, where he performed and conducted jazz workshops that were featured on radio and television programs in over 12 countries. He currently holds adjunct teaching positions at Cosumnes River College, American River College and California State University Sacramento (1998-2006), and is one of "The Professors" at the STJS Trad Camps.

 

 

Ron Jones
Drums

After Ron retired from playing drums with the US Air Force show bands for many years, he backed up such prime time entertainers as Frankie Laine, Kay Starr, the Ink Spots, and Diahann Carroll.  Since he moved to Sacramento in the early 1980s, he’s played with many top West Coast jazz bands.  A member of the Festival Committee, Ron is a very popular drummer on the national jazz festival circuit.

 

 

Jerry Lopes
Adjudicator / String Bass

Jerry Lopes is a retired music educator who was a teacher for 38 years and continues to be a clinician/teacher, an adjudicator since 1982, a conductor of the American River College Orchestra and of the Capitol Pops Concert Band. He is also a classical musician with the Sacramento Camellia Symphony and a jazz performer on string bass with the local jazz band, Dr. Bach and the Jazz Practitioners.

 

 

Mike McMullen
Adjudicator / Reeds

Mike studied at the NaviBase Music School, the SF Conservatory, and the Dick Grove School in Los Angeles. He is a composer, recording artist, private reeds instructor, and in his 10th year as Director of the Jazz Ensemble at University of California, Davis. He is a jazz faculty member at Sacramento State University and American River College. Mike is the founding member of Sacramento region’s premier jazz group, Capital Jazz Project.

 

 

Howard Miyata
Trombone/Tuba

Howard Miyata has been a low brass consultant/ clinician for Kanstul Musical Instruments and Director of Bands since 1995 with the Gilroy Unified School District. Having performed as a featured guest tubist in various jazz festivals and a former trombonist with the Royal Society Jazz Orchestra for many years, he is best known as the fun-loving trombone vocalist with the High Sierra Jazz Band from Three Rivers, CA, for the last 20 years and is one of the fine family of JazzDagen musicians performing across the globe.

Steve Roach has been the Director of Jazz Studies at Sacramento State University since 2001, and directs both their large jazz ensembles and the University’s Latin Jazz Ensemble. Dr. Roach also teaches courses in jazz pedagogy and jazz styles, and offers private instruction in jazz trumpet. He hosts the CSUS Summer Jazz Camp and the CMEA / Sacramento State Winter Jazz Festival. He is a free-lance trumpeter when time allows in his busy schedule. Visit the Sac. Doug Pauly
Guitar

An alumnus of the Berklee College of Music, Doug is a guitarist, composer and arranger. He performs in jazz and Latin combos, big bands, orchestras, commercial music groups and a Balkan music ensemble. He has been contracted to perform with Connie Francis, Bobby Rydell, Frankie Avalon, Peter Noonan (Herman's Hermits), Anacani, Barbara McNair, Buddy Wachter (The Paganini of the Banjo), the Three Phantoms (touring Broadway review), Rajaton, the Sacramento Symphony, the Modesto Symphony, the Best of Broadway and many other professional shows. Doug has produced and released six recordings ranging from solo guitar to a Latin quintet. Dave Robinson
Adjudicator / Cornet / Trumpet

Dave has toured with the top traditional jazz and swing bands in the Washington, DC area for nearly 30 years. He is the founder of the Traditional Jazz Educators Network, and director of the Traditional Jazz Curriculum Project. Dave has directed the award-winning Capital Focus Jazz Band youth group since 1988. His impressive collection of traditional jazz recordings can be heard on his weekly program. "The French Quarter," on XM Satellite Radio.

 

 

Bob Schulz
Feedback / Trumpet
TJYBF Guest Clinician in 2007

Bob Schulz is the leader of Frisco Jazz Band, on cornet and vocals. Bob was born in Wonewoc, WI. He was a school band director for 17 years before joining the legendary Turk Murphy Jazz Band of San Francisco in 1979. His eight years with Turk included 300 taped radio shows, many LPs, tours of US and Europe, and the Carnegie Hall tribute to Turk. Bob still leads the Turk Murphy band for special engagements. He is the foremost exponent of the Bob Scobey trumpet style and is an outstanding vocalist in the tradition of Clancy Hayes. Bob was chosen to play the part of Bob Scobey with the Scobey Reunion Band engagement at the 1988 Los Angeles Classic Jazz Festival and in 1989 at the Big Horn Jazz Festival in Chicago. Bob Secor
Adjudicator / Piano

Bob Secor plays piano and trumpet, and with a Masters in Music Composition, he has written over 300 arrangements for jazz band, concert band and orchestra. He writes for radio and television shows and commercials, including being on staff for Young Indiana Jones. Bob has taught jazz ensemble since 1990 at Delta Community College and at Cosumnes River College.
